The Silent Guest

 The Silent Guest

The Silent Guest Ethan had just moved into a new apartment—a cheap but spacious loft in an old building downtown. It was perfect for him, except for one odd rule the landlord mentioned before handing over the keys:

"Never close the closet door completely."

Ethan had chuckled at the time, assuming it was some old superstition or a quirk of the building’s aging structure. Maybe the door tended to stick, or maybe the landlord just didn’t want tenants damaging it by forcing it open. Either way, he didn’t think much of it.

The first few nights were uneventful. He spent his evenings unpacking, arranging furniture, and getting used to the creaks and groans of the old building. The closet door, slightly ajar as per the landlord’s instruction, didn’t bother him.

But then, strange things started happening.

Some mornings, he would wake up to find the door open wider than he’d left it. Other times, he’d hear faint rustling sounds from inside the closet when he knew it was empty. At first, he rationalized it—drafts, settling wood, his imagination.

One night, though, he awoke abruptly. The apartment was silent, but something felt… off. The air seemed heavier, thick with an unshakable presence. Slowly, his eyes adjusted to the dim light filtering in from the street. That’s when he saw it.

A figure stood in the closet, half-hidden in shadow. Motionless. Silent.

Ethan’s breath caught in his throat. He reached for his phone, fumbling to turn on the flashlight, but the moment the beam illuminated the space—nothing. Just his clothes, hanging still. The closet was empty.

Shaken, he left the door slightly wider than before and forced himself back to sleep. But the next night, it happened again. And the next.

Then, one evening, after returning home late, exhausted and frustrated, he decided to break the rule. He shut the closet door completely.

That night, he barely slept. The air felt suffocating, the silence unnatural. Then, in the deepest hours of the night, he woke to a sound that made his skin crawl.

A slow, deliberate creak.

The closet door was opening—on its own.

Ethan didn’t move, didn’t breathe. A shadow stretched across the floor as the door inched wider, revealing—nothing. And yet, he knew he was not alone.

A whisper, just barely audible, slithered through the dark.

"You shouldn't have closed the door."

The next morning, Ethan broke his lease.
